It is said that is name, along with that of his brother, Charles Herbert, was chosen because it would look good on the brass plate hanging outside a doctor's office. (Betty Lahiff, 1994)

Sudden Death on Saturday
--
Prominent Hospital Worker
The death occurred at his residence, Butler-street, Armidale, on Saturday, of Mr. John Hubert Lutton, well known resident of Armidale.
The late Mr Lutton, who was 59 years of age, had been in indifferent health for some months, but death was entirely unexpected.
Deceased was a valued employee of the Railway service, and a prominent Friendly Society member. For the past year he had acted as one of the representatives of the Railway employees on the Board of Directors of the Armidale and District Hospital and had rendered valuable service to the institution. He was re-elected to the position only last week. He was also an official umpire of the N.E. Cricket Association.
A widow and a family of five sons and one daughter survive. [ed: There were two daughters alive; one, Dorothy, was married]
The soccer match between Armidale City and West Armidale, which was to have taken place on Saturday, was postponed on account of his death. Three of deceased's sons are members of the team.
The funeral took place this afternoon, after a service in St Peter's Cathedral, for the Church of England cemetery. Members of the Protestant Alliance Friendly Society were in attendance, the railway employees, sporting bodies, and the Hospital Board being represented. Rev R.C. Cockerell conducted the service, and Piddington's had charge of the arrangements. The P.A.F.S. service was read by Bro. R Rowland, P.M.
Helen Lutton died in 1955 at Mortdale.
Ron, Nanny Lutton (Helen née Cathie) and Audrey at Gwen and Clem Briggs wedding Ron and Audrey are the children of Jack Lutton. |
